Marmer adalah batuan kristalin kasar yang berasal dari batu gamping atau dolomit. Marmer yang murni berwarna putih dan terutama disusun oleh mineral kalsit.
Marmer atau batu pualam merupakan batuan hasil proses metamorfosa atau malihan dari batu gamping. Pengaruh suhu dan tekanan yang dihasilkan oleh gaya endogen menyebabkan terjadi rekristalisasi pada batuan tersebut membentuk berbagai foliasi mapun non foliasi.
Akibat rekristalisasi struktur asal batuan membentuk tekstur baru dan keteraturan butir. Marmer Indonesia diperkirakan berumur sekitar 30–60 juta tahun atau berumur Kuarter hingga Tersier.
